Artist statement

Although principal a painter of the cityscape cannot be characterized entirely as a landscape painter although I frequently paint intimate portraits of supplementary urban subject matter, capturing the details of a single building or an entire cityscape. Capturing the subtleties and intensities of light is essential. The shapes that appear are played against the architectural surface which corresponds with the figure and composition. Although the colour is of vibrant and the use of pattern is rich and intense, my creative process originates from quiet and stillness taking the attention away from an eventful to a calm contemplation.

My process demands an exploration of ideas through repetition and experimentation. I use oil paint, its versatility, longer drying time and its potential to be both transparent and opaque necessary to develop rich textural surfaces and effects. I approach my blank canvases without a definitive image and let the painting develop in a slow organic way, working on several simultaneous during the process.
